Reintroduces Communication Stations in Trauma and Orthopaedic ST3 Interviews
In a significant development for aspiring orthopaedic specialists, the Yorkshire and Humber region has announced a strategic shift in its Trauma and Orthopaedic ST3 interview format for 2024. The spotlight of this transformation is the reintroduction of communication stations, marking a pivotal moment for candidates.
The New Interview Landscape: ⚡️A 60-Minute Multi-Station Panel ⚡️
The revamped interview process is designed as a comprehensive 60-minute multi-station panel, strategically crafted to assess candidates based on the detailed criteria outlined in the 2024 Person Specification. Notably, panel members will utilize a secure online system to record candidate scores, adding a technological dimension to the evaluation process.
Breaking Down the Four Stations: A 10-Minute Deep Dive 🎯
The interview will unfold across four distinct 10-minute stations, each meticulously designed to provide a holistic view of the candidate's capabilities and qualifications.
1. Commitment to Specialty (formerly Portfolio): Navigating Your Professional Journey
In this station, candidates will be probed about various elements of their career and experiences to date. Two interviewers will independently assess candidates across domains such as Career Motivation, Learning and Development, Leadership and Team Involvement, Organisation and Planning, and Communication – Information Giving.
2. Clinical Stations: Maneuvering Through Scenarios
The Clinical station, a cornerstone of the interview, immerses candidates in a clinical scenario. Evaluated by two independent interviewers, participants will be scored on Technical Knowledge, Problem Solving and Decision Making, Situational Awareness, Communication – Information Gathering, and Communication – Information Giving.
3. Prioritisation Station: A Test of Organisational Skills
The Prioritisation station introduces a real-world prioritisation exercise. Two interviewers will assess candidates across domains such as Organisation and Planning, Communication – Information Gathering, Communication – Information Giving, Judgement Under Pressure, and Situational Awareness.
4. Communication Station: Connecting with Patients
Perhaps the most eagerly awaited addition, the Communication station focuses on scenarios involving patient communication. Two interviewers will assess candidates on Technical Knowledge, Situational Awareness, Judgement Under Pressure, Communication – Information Gathering, and Communication – Information Giving.
Preparation for Success: Navigating the Interview Landscape
With this new interview format, candidates are encouraged to prepare comprehensively. Engaging in mock scenarios that mirror real-world situations and seeking feedback can enhance readiness, particularly for the Communication and Clinical stations. Understanding the specific assessment domains in each station will guide candidates in tailoring their responses.
